SCW Chilled Water Ceiling Cassette Sizing and Capacity

The SCW series is available in six sizes matched to chilled water systems. Small-body units (2×2 series) include the SCW08 and SCW12 for standard 2-foot ceiling grids. Medium and large-body units handle higher loads while maintaining a low-profile installation.

Model Nominal Capacity Chassis
SCW08 8,000 BTU/hr Small (2×2)
SCW12 12,000 BTU/hr Small (2×2)
SCW18 18,000 BTU/hr Medium (3×3)
SCW20 20,000 BTU/hr Medium (3×3)
SCW33 33,000 BTU/hr Large (3×4)
SCW36 36,000 BTU/hr Large (3×4)

SCW Heating Configurations for Chilled Water Units

The SCW supports three heating options. Electric heat modules are factory-installed for applications without hydronic infrastructure. A 4-pipe hot water heating coil adds a dedicated heating circuit alongside the chilled water coil. For simpler piping, a 2-pipe changeover configuration uses the chilled water coil for both cooling and heating by switching the supply between chilled and hot water seasonally.

SSD and SSH Controls and Building Management Integration

Three control options are available across all models. Electro-mechanical controls use a basic 24V terminal strip with a field-supplied wall thermostat. The Modine Controls System adds microprocessor-based operation with an infrared handheld transmitter (remote control part number 5H100043, replacement remotes available from Heinlein Supply). Carel microprocessor controls with network cards allow connection to building management systems via BACnet or Modbus protocols.

All units include terminals for remote start/stop and an alarm status relay for unit failure notification.

Modine Ceiling Cassette Installation and Condensate Management

The cassette chassis is constructed from lightweight galvanized sheet steel. Built-in knockouts provide connections for fresh air intake and supply air branch ducts. Polystyrene blanking pieces are included to seal unused openings. Optional duct collars are available as field-installed accessories for applications requiring supplemental ventilation or directed airflow.

Each unit includes a factory-installed condensate pump and check valve. A high-level switch provides overflow protection. A low ambient kit is available for SSD and SSH condensing units operating in cold climates. An optional disconnect switch supports safe maintenance access.

Modine Ceiling Cassette FAQ

What is the difference between SCW, SSD, and SSH models?

SCW units use a chilled water coil connected to a central building chilled water system. SSD units are direct expansion (DX) cooling units paired with an outdoor condensing unit. SSH units are heat pumps that provide both cooling and heating through a reversing valve and matched outdoor condenser. All three share the same cassette chassis and installation footprint.

What refrigerant do the SSD and SSH models use?

SSD and SSH models use R-410A refrigerant. Each unit includes a factory-installed thermal expansion valve and large surface area evaporator coils with copper tubes and mechanically bonded aluminum fins.

How quiet are Modine ceiling cassettes?

The cassettes use an enclosed multi-speed external rotor motor driving a centrifugal fan. Sound-absorbent cabinet insulation and rigid panel construction keep noise levels at or below 50 dB in many configurations. Air outlet vanes on medium and large chassis models are motor-driven with auto-sweep capability.

What is the difference between SCW/SSD/SSH and CCW/CSD/CSH?

CCW, CSD, and CSH are the Airedale by Modine branded versions of the same ceiling cassette platform. SCW corresponds to CCW (chilled water), SSD corresponds to CSD (DX cooling), and SSH corresponds to CSH (heat pump). The units share identical specifications and parts.

Where can I get a replacement remote for my Modine ceiling cassette?

The infrared remote control for microprocessor-equipped models is part number 5H100043. Replacement remotes are in stock at Heinlein Supply. Call us to order or confirm compatibility with your unit.
