What the 5H79749 Ignition Control Board Does in Your Heater

The ignition control board manages the entire startup sequence on direct spark ignition (DSI) heaters. When the thermostat calls for heat, the board opens the gas valve, fires the spark igniter, and confirms flame through the flame sensor. If the sensor does not detect flame within a few seconds, the board locks out the system to prevent unburned gas from building up.

A failing board can cause repeated lockouts, no-heat calls, or intermittent ignition. If your heater sparks but will not stay lit, or if it locks out after several ignition attempts, the ignition control board is one of the first components to check. The flame sensor and wiring harness should also be inspected before replacing the board.

Hot Dawg Date Code and Ignition Type Requirements

This board only fits Hot Dawg HD and HDS models built after May 2007 that use direct spark ignition. Earlier HD and HDS units with standing pilot ignition use a different control board.

You can find the manufacture date on the serial plate, usually on the side of the heater cabinet. If your unit has a standing pilot flame, this is not the correct board.

HDB and HDC models shipped with DSI from the factory and do not have a date restriction. All PTP, PTS, PTC, BTS, BTC, and IPT models listed in the compatibility table above are also compatible without date limitations.

If you are unsure which board your heater needs, call us with your model and serial number.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my ignition control board has failed?

The most common signs are repeated lockouts, a heater that sparks but will not stay running, or no spark at all when the thermostat calls for heat. Before replacing the board, check the flame sensor, wiring connections, and gas supply. If those components test fine and the problem continues, the board is the likely cause.

Is the 5H0797490000 the same as the 5H79749?

Yes. Modine uses both numbers for the same part. The 5H0797490000 is the full catalog number and 5H79749 is the short form. Either number will pull up this ignition control board.
